Chess Rules - The King
The King is your general. When he falls, the battle is lost. He must be protected at all costs. Your own attacks will often focus on trying to break through your opponent's fortress to expose his King.
Where the Kings Start
Each side starts with 1 King.
The King is placed along the edge, on the centre square of his opposite colour. The light king goes on the dark square, and the dark king goes on the light square.
The King moves one square in any direction.
The King may only move one square at a time. He may not move off the edge of the board.
How the King Captures
The King captures opposing pieces by moving onto their square and replacing them.
Special Moves
The King must follow the rules of Check and Checkmate. We'll explain these later.
The King can combine with the Rook in a special move called Castling. We'll explain this later.
